CNN —A top Mexican cartel member known as ‘El Nini,’ who was one of America’s most-wanted criminals for his alleged role in the fentanyl trade, has been extradited to the United States. Biden has previously described El Nini as one of America’s most-wanted criminals. The US State Department offered a reward of up to $3 million for information leading to his arrest and he was detained in Mexico in November of last year. The State Department also said Pérez Salas was responsible for the security apparatus of Los Chapitos, a faction of the Sinaloa cartel. “I am grateful to our Mexican government counterparts for their extraordinary efforts in apprehending and extraditing El Nini,” US Attorney General Merrick Garland’s office said in a statement.

A stage in northern Mexico where a presidential candidate was campaigning collapsed after a gust of wind blew through the area on Wednesday night, leaving at least five people dead and at least 50 others injured, a state governor said. The stage collapsed in a suburb of Monterrey, in the state of Nuevo León, during an event attended by the progressive candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez and other members of the Citizens’ Movement party. The collapse was caused by strong wind, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico said on social media. Samuel García, the governor of Nuevo León, announced the deaths and injuries in a news conference. The stage, which had been erected on a baseball field in the city of San Pedro Garza García, was the site of a campaign event for the Citizens’ Movement party’s candidate for the city’s mayoral election, Lorenia Canavati.

CNN —Threatened howler monkeys have been dropping dead from trees in Mexico’s southeastern tropical forests in recent weeks amid a nationwide drought and heat waves that have sent temperatures soaring across much of the country. In a statement over the weekend, Tabasco’s Civil Protection agency attributed the monkeys’ deaths to dehydration. A source from the agency told Reuters on Monday that monkeys have been confirmed dead in three municipalities of the state. Mexico’s health ministry reported a preliminary count of 26 people who have died from heat-related causes between the start of Mexico’s heat season on March 17 and May 11.

CNN —A showdown between Mexico and Ecuador begins on Tuesday at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the culmination of weeks of recrimination over an incident that saw Ecuadorian forces raid Mexico’s embassy in Quito in April, to arrest a former vice president who had been seeking asylum. Mexico is suing Ecuador at the world court over the armed raid, saying it violated the Vienna Convention, a United Nations treaty on diplomatic relations. The incident drew widespread international condemnation, but Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa remains unrepentant, telling CNN affiliate SBS news that he does not regret how Glas was arrested. CNN —Mexican authorities have detained the brother of the drug kingpin known as “el Mencho,” a federal source with knowledge of the case told CNN Monday. His brother, Nemesio Oseguera-Cervantes, is the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed the arrest early Monday and said the government would provide more information later in the day. “El Mencho” is wanted by US authorities, who have offered a reward of up to $10 million for information on his whereabouts. In the past, the Mexican government has labelled the Jalisco New Generation Cartel as one of the most dangerous cartels in the country.

Ecuadorean police officers entered the Mexican embassy in Quito on Friday night to arrest Ecuador’s former vice president who had taken refuge there, prompting Mexico to suspend bilateral relations. Jorge Glas, the former vice president, had been sentenced to prison and there was a warrant out for his arrest before Mexico granted him asylum, Ecuador’s presidential office said in a statement announcing the arrest. Mr. Glas had lived at the embassy since December and was granted political asylum earlier on Friday. MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A wave of wildfires in Mexico has claimed at least four lives, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador told reporters on Wednesday. The reported deaths all come from Mexico state, the country's most populous which rings the capital, the president said. There are currently 116 forest fires burning across the nation. Around 400 fires have been documented in Mexico through March 15, torching a total of more than 13,000 hectares (32,000 acres), with some of the blazes reported as far south as Chiapas state, on the border with Guatemala. According to official data, the causes include both intentionally set fires as well as those caused by agricultural activities.
